UTW 14

Child with soup-plate in the Warsaw ghetto

Art: 1993
Media: Ink
Framed, 42 inches H x 29 ¾ W

The drawing of the child was inspired by a photo in the book The 45th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, published by Interpress, Warsaw, 1988. It is seen in the chapter Children / Dzieci. [The book title in Polish: Warszawskie Ghetto -1943-1988 w 45 Rocznicę Powstania / Wydawnictwo – Interpress Publishers]. The photo this was drawn from shows a child standing behind the one depicted. The child may have been in a ghetto soup kitchen or orphanage. The other child in the photo was portrayed among the victims seen in UTW 35: Claustrophobia in the Warsaw ghetto.

The wing was drawn at the ornithology lab, Burke Museum of Natural History, University of Washington, Seattle.

Bibliography: Reproduced on the cover of Jewish Currents, March-April 2008, a quarterly journal.
